Months of preparation go into big events like the Academy Awards, experts say. Treatments like laser hair removal and professional teeth whitening are common, as are Botox, chemical peels and vitamin shots. One thing’s for sure: It’s a long road to red-carpet-ready.
If you’re a celebrity getting ready for the red carpet, a fresh manicure and a swipe of lipstick won’t cut it. Facing HD cameras and endless smartphone snaps, today’s A-listers get pampered beyond blowouts and designer dresses — think teeth whitening, vitamin injections, laser treatments and more.
It’s all hands on deck the hours before the big event, as an army of makeup artists, hair stylists and manicurists get to work — model Selita Ebanks once had 15 people working on her before a Victoria’s Secret fashion show, she told Allure magazine. But the real effort happens weeks — even months — in advance, experts say.
Here’s a look at how stars have prepared for Sunday’s Oscars:
VITAMIN SHOTS AND IV DRIPS
Stars are obsessed with the jolt of energy they get from vitamin B12 shots injected right into their blood stream — the perfect pick-me-up before a big night like the Oscars. Med Spa sees a surge in business before big events like fashion week, and celebs also love IV vitamin drips, which can be customized depending on what vitamins you need. The shot’s and IV’s help celebrities feel more alert, more energetic, more focused and they have the ability to do more.
The vitamins are also thought to be a hangover cure. “We know B12 helps break down alcohol, It’s good for people who are nightlife people.” Madonna, Cara Delevingne and Rihanna are all fans of vitamin injections.
TEETH WHITENING
Nope, those pearly whites aren’t natural. Stars usually get professional teeth whitening treatments a few days before major events. It’s always in huge demand among celebrity patients, especially during awards season.
We recommend Philips Zoom treatments, which whiten teeth in just one sitting, and take less than an hour.
The treatment ranges from $200 to $500, depending on the dentist.
LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Stars in skin-baring dresses won’t risk the camera catching any stubble, so most turn to laser hair removal months before the awards show. It’s usually the first cosmetic procedure people get. Because of the newer devices that are almost painless and super-fast, more and more young patients are removing everything. Celebs’ must-do areas are still the legs, bikini line, underarms and arms, depending on the gown. It takes at least eight treatments for the hair to go away permanently, and skin takes a day or two to recover.
MICRODERMABRASION/PEELS
Makeup isn’t enough to make stars glow on the red carpet. Favorite of stars including Rachel Weisz and Sofia Coppola — medical peels and microdermabrasion.
They will be arriving during daytime sun on the red carpet so their skin has to be flawless. Also, the skin is a canvas for their makeup. If the skin is perfect, they will be glowing! Emma Stone and Michelle Williams is known to get Power Peel, which starts with a diamond peel microdermabrasion and finishes with a blast of oxygen to rejuvenate the skin. During facials, electric current to “drain puffiness, tone muscle and tighten skin is usually added. Stars usually sleep with an exfoliating mask on their skin the night before the Oscars.
BOTOX AND FILLERS
Aging actresses don’t look that good without a little help. It’s no secret stars love Botox for smoothing skin and vanishing wrinkles, and injectable fillers help plump up lips and cheeks. The treatments are especially important before awards shows, where celebrities are “examined under a magnifying glass. Gwyneth Paltrow, Sharon Osbourne, Jennie Garth and Courtney Cox have all admitted to using Botox.
We recommends stars and people alike get the treatments at least a month before a big night like Sunday.
