PHOENIX—Had enough of the sun from this summer season? Well, your
skin certainly has had enough and now it’s time to “peel off” the
skin’s summer layers and let new ones come through for the winter
weathers. But with several kinds of peels now easily available and
affordable do you know which facial peel would be well-suited for your
skin?
Dannielli Marcelino, senior esthetician for Suddenly
Slimmer Day and Med Spa in Phoenix explains the different chemical
peels available in the market to gauge the best kind for your skin’s
needs:
A light chemical peel is perfect for those who are
experiencing dryness and breakouts. It is also perfect for people who
have uneven pigmentation and have developed fine wrinkles in the usual
places, like around the mouth, forehead and eyes. “A light chemical
peel will use a combination of alphahydroxy acids and beta hydroxy
acids, like glycolic acid, lactic acid and salicylic acid,” explains
Dannielli. The acids are gentle enough that only a light stinging will
be felt during application, but strong enough to peel off the outer
layer of the skin for a healthier glow. “This is the mildest of the
chemical peels and is almost suited for anyone wanting to bring
vibrancy back to their skin,” said Dannielli. There is barely any
downtime and suggested frequency of use is once a month.
If you have deep acne scarring, deeper wrinkles and very
uneven skin tone throughout, a medium chemical peel might bring out
the skin you’ve always wanted. This type of peel will remove skin
cells from both the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and upper part of
your middle layer of skin (dermis). “For this peel, a tricholoroacetic
acid is usually combined with a glycolic to reach deeper into the
layers,” said Dannielli. “There will be a slight burning sensation or
more intense stinging as it is applied to your skin but it is only
left on your skin for about 10 minutes,” she added. Dannielli says
that it might take the skin about 4-6 weeks for the skin to stabilize
after treatment. She also says that a treatment at least twice a year
would help bring the skin’s glow back.
For very dramatic results without going under the knife,
then a deep chemical peel is for you. If your skin has very visible
sun damage, appears very blotchy and has pre-cancerous growth, then a
deep chemical peel may be beneficial. The improvements will be obvious
a few weeks after treatment, but clients have to take into
consideration the recovery time and discomfort during the process.
“This is a more involved peel and requires a pre-treatment of Retin-A
eight weeks prior to the actual peel being applied,” explains
Dannielli.” The acid used is phenol, which really goes down deep into
the skin’s layers. It is the strongest we can use and therefore, we
usually offer a sedative to make you relax and an anesthetic to numb
your face. “One treatment with a deep chemical peel will produce
dramatic results which can last up to 10 years,” Dannielli said. “So
the uncomfortableness of the procedure might just be worth it,” she
added.
Dannielli explains that one of the best medical grade deep peels which does not require numbing or sedative, but gives the same or better results in most cases then the older deep peels is the VI Peel.
VI Peel is perfect for those who want very little downtime, a peel that is virtually painless, but produces effective results. “If you’re a person on-the-go and always needs to look good while on-the-go, then this is for you,” said Dannielli. Vi Peel is a new product that is gentle to the skin but keeps the skin
even toned and firmer. “What’s great about this is the Vi Peel is good
for skin of any color and tone. The results are equally awesome for
those with light or dark skin,” said Dannielli.
